Marcus is the Academy Performance Nutritionist at Everton Football Club. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Oxford Brookes University and went on to complete an MSc in Sports Nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University. He has previously worked in professional rugby union (Ulster Rugby) and is currently the academy nutritionist at Everton FC. Alongside his full-time role Marcus is completing his PhD under the supervision of Dr James Morton and Prof Graeme Close at Liverpool John Moores University. His PhD is entitled: ''Quantification of training load, energy intake and energy expenditure in elite youth soccer players: implications for sports nutrition guidelines.'' Marcus is a graduate member of the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register.
Are carbohydrates still king for exercise performance in 2018?
Although carbohydrate has consistently been shown to improve performance, (especially in high-intensity sports), recently the importance of carbohydrate in sport has been questioned with many now promoting a low carbohydrate high fat approach. This presentation will look at carbohydrate research from the past and present and attempt to clear up some of the confusion. Practical advice that Marcus delivers to the athletes he works with will also be presented.
