MagVenture Ltd is a medical device company, established in 2007, specializing in non-invasive magnetic stimulation systems for depression treatment as well as for clinical examination and research in the areas of neurophysiology, neurology, cognitive neuroscience, rehabilitation and psychiatry.

MagVenture Ltd would like to introduce Functional Magnetic Stimulation (fMS).
In recent years, the stimulation of the peripheral nervous system has gained increased relevance as a possible supplement within the field of neuro rehabilitation and neuropathic pain relief.
Functional Magnetic Stimulation has been developed to stimulate the peripheral nervous system.
A pulsed magnetic field penetrates tissue and induces an electric field at the target point (= peripheral nerve). The induced electrical field changes the polarity along the nerve fibres and eventually releases an action potential. If this nerve is a motor nerve, a muscle fibre will be activated. Once several muscle fibres are activated, the whole muscle will twitch.
Direct skin contact is not necessary as the magnetic pulses travel freely and unhindered through clothes, casts, skin, and bone tissue. fMS thus provides substantial advantages as it can deliver a much deeper stimulation of muscles than can be achieved with Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and is therefore an excellent supplementary tool for rehabilitation.
Some of the reported advantages of fMS are many and include;

• Less painful than TENS
• Provides long-lasting effect on pain in certain patients
• Time and energy saving compared to conventional therapeutic massage

Rehabilitation of sensory and cognitive function typically involves methods for retraining neural pathways or training new neural pathways to regain or improve neurocognitive functioning that has been diminished by disease or trauma.
Research indicates that magnetic stimulation is able to improve the rehabilitation when used as a co-treatment for indications such as stroke, paresis, spasticity, aphasia/apraxia, pain, neuromuscular disturbances, and movement disorders. In the case of stroke, the loss of voluntary movement in the limbs of one side of the body or loss of speech production or understanding are severe consequences. As opposed to most of the already used methods, magnetic stimulation is treating the cause and not just the symptoms. Magnetic stimulation is painless as there is no current stimulation across your skin.

Rehabilitation with Magnetic Stimulation has not yet been approved by a regulatory body, and the treatment is considered investigational.
